The award supports the reciprocal exchange of members of the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) and the American Society for Microbiology (AMS), to present his/her research at the other organisation’s main conference.

Extended Description

The Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) is a membership organisation bringing together 50 member societies from 36 European countries, supporting over 30,000 microbiologists. The Society’s aim is to advance microbiology in Europe by offering research grants and helping to inform and educate through publications, journals, conferences and teaching support.

The FEMS-ASM Mäkelä-Cassell Award is designed to benefit early career scientists from both the Federation of European Microbiological Societies and the American Society for Microbiology (AMS) by giving them the opportunity to present their work overseas and experience the best of microbiology in the partner country. The programme also provides an opportunity for both organisations to become more visible to each other’s membership.

Eligibility Criteria

Eligible FEMS applicants are microbiologists active in research and less than 36 years of age. They should have been members of a FEMS member Society for at least one year before the application deadline.

Eligible ASM applicants are U.S. citizen or permanent residents of the U.S. who are a current member of the American Society for Microbiology. They should be a current PhD (or equivalent) student or recipient of a PhD within the past five years.

Value Notes

The FEMS grant is intended to support travel and living costs of the grantee only.

ASM provides the following:

  • $5000 towards expenses associated with participation in the Biannual FEMS Congress.
  • An economy flight between the U.S. and Europe.
  • FEMS Congress registration.

Terms and Conditions

ASM proposals will be assessed on:

  • Academic excellence of the applicant (CV).
  • Quality and originality of proposed presentation (Abstract).
  • Depth of the applicant’s research experience (Synopsis of Research).

Application Procedure

FEMS applications should be submitted to the FEMS Central Office using the online grant application system. ASM applicants should be submitted via ASM’s online application system.

ASM will select the member attending the biannual FEMS Congress and FEMS will select the member attending the ASM General Meeting occurring in intermittent years when no FEMS Congress is held.

In 2016, ASM applicants may apply. The deadline is 15 December 2016.

The next opportunity for a FEMS member to apply will be for the ASM Congress in 2018.
